There is no charge to attend our Reading Group sessions. It is however essential to book a place in advance. Call us on 01628 473240.

Our last O read took us to Oman when we read Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi. Now, we are applying a spot of poetic licence and opting for more of a classic that will take us, in part, to the region of Oceania.

The Moon and Sixpence is a novel by William Somerset Maugham, an English writer, known for his plays, novels and short stories. The Moon and Sixpence was first published on 15 April 1919. It is told in episodic form by a first-person narrator providing a series of glimpses into the mind and soul of the central character, Charles Strickland, a middle-aged English stockbroker, who abandons his wife and children abruptly to pursue his desire to become an artist. The story is, in part, based on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin, the French painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist, and writer.

This is a chance to explore a wider place setting and also to visit a classic book, either as a first-time read, or maybe as a revisit. If you’d like to join the discussion on this classic novel, please contact us to reserve your place.

You may order a copy of the book HERE.
